Each year at this time Americans celebrate Christopher Columbus and his supposed "discovery" of America. The problem is Columbus didn't step foot on North American soil. What he "discovered" was the island of Hispaniola - what today is Haiti and the Dominican Republic.
Another 20 years would go by before what history records as the first discovery on North American soil when the Spaniards - Cortez - landed in Florida. The city of St. Augistine has become a tourist attraction for its buildings and fort that were constructed when Spain first "claimed" the land for their own.
